Losing weight requires tremendous willpower. For some, losing weight seems like an impossible task. So how do we go about losing those extra pounds successfully?
Before you start, have a sound strategy in place and one of the things you can do is to break you weight loss journey into two phases.
Another thing you might want to consider is to use weight loss medications to get you started during phase one of your weight loss journey. According to Dr. Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aesthetics, this strategy will help you achieve sustained weight loss because once you’ve achieved weight loss in phase one, you will be motivated to keep off the weight in phase two. Click on the video clips below to find out more about Dr. Terence Tan’s thoughts on this.
Weight loss phase 1: Active weight loss
This is known as the active weight loss phase and generally the most challenging phase. This is because this is the phase “where one has to eat far less than one needs or exercise far more than one is used to,” says Dr. Terence Tan. The objective is to balance the amount of calories taken with the amount of calories expended through exercise.
This initial phase of active weight loss is where short-term medications are important to make the task easier, elaborates Dr. Terence Tan. They work by reducing hunger, helping a person eat lesser than they usually need to. Rapid weight loss is a great motivator and motivation can lead to great things.
Weight loss phase 2: Maintenance of weight loss
“This is the phase where most people are uncomfortable with,” says Dr. Terence Tan. In this phase, one can eat more than in phase one because having reached one’s ideal weight, they only need to achieve caloric balance. Being able to eat more and actually eating more makes many people who have lost weight feel very uncomfortable and to a point, guilty even. They feel that it is contradictory and would undermine their efforts. This is not the case.
Patients who have achieved the desired weight should stop or cut down their medications in this phase simply because they are not needed as much any more. There is no need to have an ultra low calorie diet. “The seemingly impossible has been done,” says Dr. Terence Tan. They should be feeling motivated and confident, having been equipped with the knowledge and tools to help them keep the weight off.
